Intravitreal Injection
Intravitreal (into the eye) injection of drugs is performed with the aim of drugs reaching retşna directly.It is performed in various diseases like Age related macular degeneration (AMD),macular edema, DRP,endophtalmitis,BRVO.Intravitreal drug injection is made for nearly 30 years.This procedure enables the drug reach retina directly without interfeering other organs and tissues.Various drugs can be injected.Anti-VEGF drugs used to treat age related macular degeneration (AMD) are injected intravitreally.The Anti -VEGF drugs are injected every 4-6 weeks minumum 3 times.
The procedure lasts only for a few seconds and is painless.Before the procedure a local anesthetizing drop and povidon iodine solution is dropped onto the eye, eyelashes and eyelids and ocular surface gets sterile.After the procedure the patient isprescribed a wide spectrum antibiotic eyedrop for precaution.
Redness at the injection site can be encountered, that vanishes in a couple of days.The risk rate of endophtalmitisafter an injection is 0.1 %. Transient eye pressure elevation,cataract,retinal detachment are among the complications of that procedure.
