Excimer laser is an ultraviolet laser type used usually in microelectric tools. It is a combination ofexcited dimer. ıt was invented by Russian physicists in Lebedev Physics Institute in 1970. It is a combination of a noble gas and a reactive gas, under the right electrical stimulus and high pressure the high energised excimer molecule is generated and a laser light is formed in the range of ultraviolet wavelenght.
Trokel first used it in the eye surgeries in 1983. It is used in the field of refractive surgery. It has a 193nm long wavelenght and consists of the combination of Argon and Fluoride gas. Excimer Laser breaks the molecular bonds in cornea without generating any heat and harm to the tissue around, so it makes the tissue evaporate just as wanted. That is the reason why it is suitable for refractive surgery. As a result the refractive error of the eye is corrected by changing the inclination of the frontal cornal surface.
Excimer Laser is used in correction of myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism. PRK, LASIK, LASEK and SUPRACOR are treatment methods that all use excimer laser.
